The Chicago neighborhood of Lakeview is as diverse as can be. A community consisting of students, young professionals, families and retirees, the Lakeview area has a heavy rotation of new residents on a yearly basis.

Enter Horizon Café. Each year, the café offers a generous four-course turkey dinner with all the trimmings for $18.99 (dine in) and $20.99 (carry out and delivery). To help meet its diverse customer base, the prices have not increased from last year. Horizon Café ranked in 2008 for top ten best soups in Chicago by Citisearch, and chef and co-owner John Cocalis looks forward to making his signature creamy pumpkin soup. “I like making the soup because it’s a special occasion soup that’s fitting for the season. Many customers who are living alone or dining with family appreciate state that the food reminds them of home.”
Since many customers are traveling for family dinners, Horizon Café will feature special breakfast selections on Thanksgiving morning, including Turkey and Swiss Omelet, Pumpkin Spice French Toast and Turkey Ciabatta Breakfast Sandwich. In addition, the much-anticipated Apple Butter Pumpkin Pie will be available for advance orders. “Many of our customers have made it a tradition to order pies and offer them to their family and friends,” says Nick.
Reservations for parties of six or more are recommended. Special delivery and carry out service are available for residents of Lakeview, Uptown, Lincoln Park, Gold Coast and Streeterville—a rare service on this particular holiday. John stated, “That his secretary’s daughter had emergency surgery at Children’s Memorial.” The family-preoccupied with the girl’s recovery-failed to plan Thanksgiving for their other children. John wanted to offer the family a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings and pies for the nursing staff.

Horizon Café Celebrates Thanksgiving in Lakeview and Beyond!
Horizon Cafe will be open for Thanksgiving from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Take advantage of home-style cooking at its best. “We’ve offered Thanksgiving in Lakeview for more than three years and have quickly become a local tradition, featured in the Red Eye, Centerstage and Metromix web sites and the Chicago Tribune,” says Nickolas J. Start with your choice of pumpkin soup or creamy chicken rice. Guests will dig into a side garden salad with your choice of dressing. Several of the dressings are made by Chef John including the House favorites: Greek, balsamic and ranch dressings. The main course is hand-carved turkey breast with cream or brown gravy, homemade mashed potatoes, seasoned dressing, vegetable and cranberry sauce. The dessert course will feature a choice of either pumpkin pie or apple pie.

Horizon Café to Be Featured on Metromix: The TV Show!
Chicago (December 13, 2006) – Horizon Café has recently received several press notices since it reopened. The Café received a positive review on Centerstage’s web site. The Red Eye featured Horizon Café in October, and the Chicago Tribune listed them as place to go for Thanksgiving.
Now Horizon Café will be featured on Metromix’s television show for the second time. The show segment, titled “Brunch @ revamped Horizon Café,” will air on Thursday, December 14 on CLTV. Show times are 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m. and midnight. Look for it on either Channel 10 or Channel 40 in the local 60613 zip code. Nick Cocalis, managing partner and several customers were interviewed. Six meals were showcased as well as their catering service. “We’re please to have Jackie Tranchida showcase Horizon Café and highlight how the Café has evolved this year,” says Nick. The segment, about 1-2 minutes in duration, will feature the interior and exterior of the restaurant.

Horizon Café, Lakeview’s Favorite Eatery, to Reopen
Chicago (June 19, 2006) – Horizon Café, 3805 N. Broadway, near Broadway and Halsted, will reopen June 22, 2006. Billed as a family style American eatery, Horizon Café is offering a flavorful combination of classic home-style American dishes with international entrees and wholesome comfort food. “It’s a unique restaurant for a diverse neighborhood that combines old-world favorites with a modern twist,” says executive chef and partner John Cocalis.
Horizon Café was purchased in the summer of 2004 with the idea of turning the restaurant into a premiere casual dining destination in Chicago. The owners wanted to offer a full-service restaurant which includes:
* Over 150 items on its creative home-style menu;
* Over 175 additional entrees per year through its daily specials;
* Themed entrée specials everyday including an affordable pasta entree, homemade Greek meals, and master chef inspired fish dishes, hearty sandwiches and generous comfort food;
* Exceptional carry out service within 15 minutes;
* Extended delivery service within the Lakeview community; and
* A full service catering menu designed to make your party more enjoyable.
Father and son team, John and Nick Cocalis, embarked on a business project in early 2004. John was feeling a little restless in his semi-retired role, and Nick was looking to make a move into restaurant management. After talking about their personal goals, they were on a mission to find a totally unique restaurant and give it their personal “Cocalis” touch. Although a fire temporarily suspended this favorite Lakeview eatery, John and Nick are back, with even more dedication, to reintroduce Horizon Café to the community.
“After a long hiatus due to the fire, my father and I took this time to explore various cuisines throughout Chicago and Las Vegas. We took the best of casual and high-end establishments, and blended them with our own personal style. My father went through a detailed recipe archive that was accumulated throughout his time in the food industry. As a result, creative entrees are offered at affordable prices,” states Nick Cocalis, managing partner.
About the Design
The owners secured Chicago Building Design PC to develop the architectural floor plan. There was an opportunity to make subtle changes that yielded big results. “For example, just by changing the dining room counter allowed the restaurant to have more seating,” states Jeremiah Johnson, principal architect. Nick Cocalis picked the interior fabrics, finishes and paint samples. “I wanted the restaurant to have an entirely different look from its previous run by being a little edgy but very soothing and comfortable at the same time,” reports Nick. Earth tones make up the calming environment from the warm cherry wood furniture to the rich fabrics and neutral walls. Vibrant artwork and unique food art presentations make up the accessories with a complimenting mural on one wall. The goal is to have the Café’s environment serve as fun spotlights for the main attractions: the food and camaraderie.
Located at the intersection of Broadway, Halsted and Grace, Horizon Café is in one of Chicago’s trendiest locations. The area is diverse with a wide array of shops, theaters and bars. The restaurant intends to reaffirm itself as a popular dining destination and be known as the “seen and be seen café.”
